Bio at Steve Smith Fine Art
Painter and Sculptor, Born in Missouri Living in Sedona, Arizona since 1997. A lifetime artist, Steve began painting in oils around the age of eight, and began painting signs at age fourteen. After earning a degree in Design Technology in 1973, he founded an outdoor advertising and commercial art company. For the next seventeen years his attention was split between advertising and fine art. After the sale of the business in 1990, he began painting full time, and has been sculpting in steel and bronze since 1997. His paintings and sculptures are in private collections across the U.S. and abroad. Interview, March, 2007: Q. " Why do you do Art?" A. "I don't know how not to."
Q. " What is Art?" A. "Visual exploration of emotion."
Q. "Is that good?" A. "I don't think it's bad."
Q. "And?" A. "Creating a piece takes time and patience. You have to look at things closely. When you do that you began to understand why things 'are'. I don't think that's bad." Q. " Where do your ideas come from?" A. "A thought, a dream, a look in someone's eye. Every glance is a painting. I just don't have time to paint them all"
Q. "What is Art worth?" A. "Some of my greatest rewards have been when a collector sees themselves in a piece of my work. It's a connection, somehow always unexpected, but priceless."
Q." Why is Art important?" A. "Picasso said, 'Art washed away from the soul, the dust of everyday life.' That's good enough for me."
